During Carers Week 2026, EyUp! awarded £550 to the Barnsley carers to organise touch yoga sessions to help improve carers’ wellbeing.

Fifty carers from Barnsley attended the nine sessions, which included breathing techniques, gentle movement and relaxation techniques that they can continue to use in their everyday lives.

The touch yoga sessions delivered clear benefits to the carers, alongside supporting staff members who have their own caring responsibilities. Carers stated feeling calmer, less stressed, and valued the opportunity to have ‘me time’. The sessions also helped bring carers together, creating a supportive environment and reducing isolation.

Many carers shared that the sessions exceeded their expectations and they have expressed interest in future sessions. Here are some of their own reflections on the project.

“The yoga classes were very good, very informative on all the benefits to help parts of the body. Also, it helped me to relax and feel well.”

“I was unsure at first and thought “this isn’t really my thing”… Wow. I have loved every minute.”

“Yoga has not only given me time for myself during the sessions, but it has also given me the tools to carry on and transfer it to lifelong positive habits.”

“I hope more people give these wonderful sessions a chance. You will not be disappointed.”

Anna Barrett, manager, Barnsley carers commented “Overall, the project has been very well received, with clear benefits to carers’ wellbeing and confidence. It’s been rewarding to see carers try something new, grow in confidence, and take away skills they can use in everyday life.”
