The acute therapy team were awarded over £200 from EyUp! charity to enhance support for patients with sensory needs.
The team has seen an increase in patients with sensory needs, including individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and others who benefit from sensory regulation. The ward environment can be highly stimulating, and staff recognised the need for resources to help patients manage sensory overload and improve their wellbeing.
The team purchased a variety of sensory items, including sensory putty, stress balls and fidget toys. These items were selected to cater to a range of sensory preferences and needs. The team created six sensory boxes, each stocked with these tools, ready to be used by patients when needed.
Charlotte MacGregor, occupational therapist commented “We get people who would benefit from sensory input regularly but have not had the resources to provide this.
“The sensory boxes have already made a noticeable difference, helping patients feel more comfortable and supported during their stay on the ward.”
