On Friday 9 June 2023, Carers came together at St Swithun’s Community Centre, Wakefield, to recognise and support carers in the community, as part of Carers Week.
EyUp! And NHS Charities together supported the event with the therapeutic fund awarded from the Trust’s ‘caring for carers fund’. The event celebrated the work of the Trust’s carer champions, who have gone above and beyond hosting events throughout the year for carers.
The event, which was opened by Trust chair Marie Burnham, highlighted the work that has been achieved throughout the year to support carers. It was also an opportunity to thank the staff carers network, and carer champions in supporting the development of the newly launched staff carers awareness training.
Throughout the year over £11,500 of funding has gone towards various fun activities including, day trips, meals, wellbeing and social events and cost of living vouchers.
Gillian Cowell, carers project management officer, South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, commented
“We had great feedback from carers stating how nice it was to have a meal/afternoon tea out. It gave carers a break from caring and chance to meet other carers and form peer support.”
A staff carer said
“I thoroughly enjoyed being together. It’s great to know we are not alone and there is support out there”.
