The staff carers network (SCN) at South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust was awarded funding from EyUp! Charity for an overnight retreat at Parceval Hall in Leeds for staff carers.

Following feedback from a SCN meeting, the network decided to organise a retreat to offer staff ‘time out’ from their caring responsibilities in a safe environment.

The one night retreat took place on Friday 24 November and was attended by 15 members of staff from the SCN. They spent their time taking part in meditation, Tai Chi, a mindfulness walk and socialising with other carers.

The retreat aimed to support staff carers who might find it hard to have a good work life balance and alongside caring responsibilities are not always able to prioritise their own health and wellbeing.

Gillian Cowell, equality and involvement lead said “Thank you to everyone who came along to the retreat, it was a great success and gave people the opportunity to enhance wellbeing, mindfulness and reflection.

“Feedback from the attendees has been positive and we are hoping to be able to make this an annual retreat.”

Feedback from staff carers

“Thank you for a wonderful opportunity for some quality me time”.

“The calming environment has given me time to reflect and think about the importance of my own wellbeing”.

“The personal impact is immense. I have rarely been away from family due to my caring responsibilities, and I have felt very safe and loved”.

“I have been able to relax and switch off from the everyday hustle and bustle. It made me realise how much I needed this and the importance of taking a time out”.

“Taught me ways to stay grounded and inspired me to try new methods of self care, such as Tai Chi.”

The staff carers network (SCN) was founded in 2020 to empower, embrace, and support staff carers across the Trust to identify as carers. The aim of the network is to support carers in both their caring and professional roles.
