EyUp! awarded £260 to the early intervention in psychosis North Kirklees insight team to organise exercise sessions for their female service users.
The team supports the early identification of psychosis in people aged 14 to 65. Offering psychosocial interventions, using educational and behavioural approaches to treat and prevent conditions, with the goal of improving long-term outcomes for individuals experiencing psychosis.
Four sessions were held at Soothill Community Association, featuring a fun, full-body Zumba workout called ‘Power Hour,’ which combines cardio and dance into one energetic class.
Physical activity and mental well-being are closely linked. It boosts self-esteem, motivates individuals through goal setting and achievement, and positively impacts mood, supporting people’s mental health.
Feedback from the classes have been positive, with service users commenting:
“It was great fun and something different to try.”
“I wasn’t sure if I would like the class, but I wanted to give it a go and I am glad I did because I loved it.”
Michelle Earley, support to recovery worker, early intervention in psychosis team North Kirklees insight team “We have seen a huge confidence boost for the women and they are now showing more interest in exercise and understand the benefits. After seeing how much everybody enjoyed the classes, we will be looking to do them again as it was a great success.”
Kulthum Aswat, support to recovery worker, early intervention in psychosis team North Kirklees insight team “Everything went smoothly, and the group and ladies wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without the support of EyUp! funding.
“We’re truly grateful for the backing, as it will encourage new ladies to engage in all that we do, helping them stay well and connected within their own communities.”
