The Barnsley school aged immunisation team were awarded £290 to set up a calming space for children before their vaccinations.
The team identified a need to better support children and young people who experience anxiety around vaccinations, particularly those with autism, needle phobia, or other sensory sensitivities. Recognising that a clinical setting can be intimidating, the team wanted to create a more welcoming and calming environment.
The funding has helped create a relaxed, therapeutic space within one of their clinic rooms designed to reduce stress and anxiety for children and young people receiving vaccinations.
Susan Norman, clinical team manager, child health information service / school aged immunisation service commented “The therapeutic room has made a real difference. The new space allows for allocated appointments where children can spend more time with staff in a calm environment.
“Children who were previously anxious are now enjoying the space, it’s helping them to relax before their vaccinations and feel more at ease.”
