Subha Thiyagesh, chief medical officer at South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust raised over £2500 (including Gift Aid) by completing the ambitious Mount Everest Base Camp trek.
In October 2024, Subha and her husband embarked on their once in lifetime adventure to complete the challenging trek. The Everest Base Camp Trek via Thukla pass takes around two weeks to complete and is around 135 kilometres long.
Reflecting on her journey, Subha commented “Due to adverse weather conditions, we experienced a two-day delay in starting the trek while waiting for a flight. However, our spirits remained high as we opted for the challenging arduous road route, navigating flood-damaged and washed-away paths through mountainous terrain. Along the way, we joined sections of the trail that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay once took on their historic ascent to the summit.
“This trek was more than just a challenge; it provided me with an opportunity to reflect and realise that we cannot always control our destiny. I learned that true ‘success’ comes from the contributions and support of many individuals who play vital roles in our journeys. When the going got tough due to bad weather, high altitude, tough terrain, and freezing temperatures (minus 20 degrees overnight) the encouragement and good wishes from everyone kept me going.”
“It was a humbling experience, and I am truly grateful for the incredible hospitality of the Nepalese people, who provided me with invaluable support. Their generosity, along with the encouragement from everyone around me, fuelled my motivation to overcome the challenges ahead. It was a surreal and unforgettable experience.
