With support from EyUp!, the Calderdale early intervention in psychosis team launched a series of mental health masterclass sessions aimed at helping service users reconnect with themselves and others through physical activity.
Thanks to £1,000 in funding, they introduced activities including abseiling, climbing, boxing, judo and yoga to enhance wellbeing and bring people together.
After seeing how well service users engaged with the sessions, the team extended the opportunity to Calderdale Recovery College attendees so more individuals could benefit.
Participants commented that they felt more motivated, less isolated, and more willing to try new things. Many described significant improvements in mood and confidence, as well as opportunities to meet new people and learn new skills.
“Boxercise is good for my mental health. This morning, I felt really low and now I feel great, it’s really boosted my mood.”
“I have taken away a greater willingness to try new things. Exercising makes you feel better, I came feeling unmotivated and left feeling great.”
“I have really enjoyed the sessions. They have given me the opportunity to meet new people and learn something new.”
“I had never tried yoga before, but it helped me relax and focus on my breath, which really quietened my mind.”
Julie Metcalf, volunteer and workplace development worker said “These sessions have been great and we’ve noticed positive changes for our service users. They have helped bring people together to try new things in a supportive environment.”
