With £300 of funding from EyUp! the North Kirklees insight team women’s group enjoyed days out at the zoo and an escape room.

The women’s group is for female service users from the North Kirklees insight team which facilitates art and crafts sessions and a walking group.

Due to the group’s regular walking group being continuously cancelled due to bad weather they were looking for an alternative activity. The group suggested visiting the zoo as they could still get out and walk but in a more sheltered area with the benefit of spending time with animals.

As part of their Eid celebrations the women also wanted to go to an escape room at White Rose Centre in Leeds. This provided positive challenges and encouraged team working to solve the puzzles. The group didn’t manage to escape on time; however, it was a fun and positive experience despite this. The women that participated built stronger relationships with each other through teamwork including new people who had joined the group for the first time.

The service users were delighted with the trips, with some of them commenting

“The escape room gave me a confidence boost in working with other people. I really enjoyed it even though we didn’t win.”

“It was nice to spend time with new people who were friendly and helpful.”

“It was nice to do something new and it pushed me out of my comfort zone.”

“I had a great time at the zoo. I got to learn more about the animals, including seeing and hearing animals I hadn’t heard before.”

Jessica Kelly, creative practitioner, South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust “Everybody had a lot of fun and they made some positive memories from both the outings. Hopefully, new trips and activities can be planned in the future to help provide the group with new opportunities and experiences.”
