The North Kirklees early intervention in psychosis service teamed up with Soothill Cycling Club to offer group riders help with motivation and to be more active.
The team was awarded £465 to put one of their service users, Chris, through a course to become a group leader. As well as bike locks and video recording equipment to keep all service users safe.
Chris came to the cycling group 18 months ago as he wanted to rekindle his hobby. The group helped Chris create a routine, structure and most importantly the team could support him doing something which he loved and enjoyed throughout his life. Chris wants to give back to the group and plans to support them as a cycle leader in the future.
The group has brought together service users socially and helps them build on their skills and confidence on riding a bike. It also helps educate people around the benefits of riding and physical activity.
Our service users enjoy the group and have given the below feedback.
“It helps me get out and enjoy myself.”
“Riding a bike helps me feel more alive and has given me the opportunity to explore my surroundings and appreciate nature.”
“This group has given me a new appreciation for nature and being outdoors, I’m now looking at more outdoor activities to join.”
Habib Dadhiwala, support time and recovery worker, North Kirklees Early intervention in psychosis team said “Support from EyUp! is always playing a huge role in what we do in the community, some of the activities/groups would not be possible without the EyUp! funding.
“We’re proud to promote positive recovery from psychosis through social inclusion alongside other interventions too. Our groups are making a huge difference and provide a platform for people to grow in their own community.”
“Individuals like Chris, make our groups what they are today. The cycling group is one of our standout activities and has given our service users the opportunity to try something new and explore the outdoors.”
