EyUp! supported the occupational therapy team at Oakwell Centre, Kendray Hospital, Barnsley to refresh and update their games, library resources and art supplies for their service users.
The team were awarded £900 to improve the resources for the Melton suite psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU), Beamshaw ward, Clark ward and Willow ward.
The art supplies have helped provide service users on our inpatient wards a creative outlet in times of crisis, as well as given them the opportunity to complete art projects to gift to their family members, carers and friends. With more games now available, service users have become more involved in playing, especially in more modern board/video games.
Overall, the feedback has been positive. The new resources have led to building rapport between service users and staff members as well as motivation to engage in further activity.
Richard Raheem, occupational therapist assistant said ‘The new resources have been a huge success. Service users have embraced the new library books, games and arts and crafts to relax themselves and we have seen morale has been lifted.
Occupational therapist assistant, Briar Curley, commented “The difference we have seen in the patients’ mood and engagement is fantastic. We have plans to further improve game collections with newer games and expand the library to include more titles and genres in the future.”
